This is a SMALL lathe that I have outgrown. If you are familiar with the Craftsman 109s, youll know what I mean. If you are just discovering them now or considering this as a first lathe, I suggest that you get on the internet and research them so that you know what they are capable of and what they arent. Simply google, Craftsman 109 lathe and plenty of information will come up. I got this lathe to handle small nylon, brass, and aluminum bushings. Now, to the machine. As you can see, it is very good shape and has not been abused. The spindle center is 3 1/4 above the bed, so in principle this lathe can handle pieces up to 6 in diameter. The V-to-V spacing of the bed rails is 2 1/8. This machine has the epicyclic/planetary backgear on the spindle pulley which you can use to either reduce spindle speeds with a 5:1 ratio, or run direct/1:1. It works fine though sometimes the sliding block that locks the annulus gear is hard to engage/disengage. This machine comes as you see in the pictures. No motor you can easily acquire one on your end or you may even have one already. Comes with no tooling, just what you see in the pictures. I have taken several pictures from many angles to give you as much information as possible. The previous owner 1. Upgraded to a newer style three jaw chuck (t-handle chuck key included), and 2. Made a newer style tool post (could be improved, but adequate for light work). Also, the previous owner installed new spindle bearings, front and rear. This model lathe has plain bronze sleeve bearings on the spindle, which is one of the reasons it is a LIGHT duty lathe. In the pictures, I point out the locations of these with a scribe. Myself, I installed brass inserts for the gibs on the cross-slide and compound slide, replacing the steel inserts. There is a close-up picture of the slides in which you can see the ends of these new brass pieces. The large gib on the rear of the carriage has NOT been changed it is likely using an original steel piece, and the lathe would benefit if it was replaced with a brass one. The thread cutting feature of this lathe is NOT working. Foremost, it is missing a Y-shaped gear mounting flange. Secondly, it does not come with any thread cutting gears, except for what are attached to the machine. I never needed to cut threads, so this wasnt an issue for me while I owned it. It is 34 x 13 x 12, and weighs 87 pounds. The item “1950 Craftsman Model 80 Metal Lathe 109 Mini 6×12 AA 109-21270 No Reserve” is in sale since Thursday, August 18, 2016.
