I took it it out the box twice over the years to run the headstock a bit to keep the bearing grease from hardening. Then I found out that the modern stuff does not set. The headstock turns smoothly. The schmutz on the lathe is the original cosmoline. I have not cleaned any of it off. The Levin Lathe website has a good description. None of the junk in the background is included.
