Boley Size 2 lathe. Includes: Lathe with cross slide, tailstock, headstock, origional (380V 3 phase) and aftermarket (220V 3 phase) motor. The motor shown on the lathe (220V 3 phase) works, but under-powered for this size of lathe. I recommend getting something closer to 1/2 HP. The original motor (included) only works on 3 phase 380V, which is fine if you’re in Europe but harder to come by in the US. The original worked when I took it off, but you will have to re-do the wiring in the connection box and no guarantee at this point. My recommendation: get a variable frequency drive & and a 1/2 HP 220V motor and call it good. Boley makes an amazing lathe, and this model is no exception. With a collet size of 9.275mm, it’s a step up from your typical 8mm lathe and can hold pieces up to about 8 mm in diameter. Makes for a good tool-room lathe – pretty similar to the schaublin 65 in terms of size and quality. This lathe lived most of it’s life in Sweden after being manufactured in Germany. The cross slide has two handle tips on it which are made by yours truly. The slide works well, smooth spinning, tight, etc. The tailstock spindle is stiff for the first 10 mm or so and then is smooth between 10-35mm, only to get a little tight again at the end of its range. This comes with an assortment of collets which are original Boley and in great shape with the exception of 1 pc which is cut by the threads (see last photo on the right). Sizes are 20, 22, 25, 30, 33, 35, 37, 40, 42, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 70, 75, 80 – 17 pcs total. Basically you have a full set from 20-80mm. These collets 9.275 mm diameter, 51mm long, and have a thread of about 8.22. Needless to say, they are specific to this lathe and rare. NOTE: This lathe does not have a working draw bar. The one shown (shop made) basically works for 8mm collets, but does not fit these larger collet. Niels Machines in Belgium has these from time to time as does another user on e-bay who has contacted me and offered to possibly sell this bit. Comes with the original 65 mm chuck and a 80 mm chuck which I created for this with a friend. The original chuck is worn and not completely true in holding work. The updated chuck is Chinese of medium quality and works fine for most work. The bearing and headstock is in good shape. Some cosmetic rust as shown in the various photos. The steady rest is not original. It’s a home job and works okay, but honestly I’m not thrilled with it. I recommend getting or making a replacement if you do a lot of hand work. The lathe and accessories weighs about 110 lbs. With a sturdy custom wood crate, I figure 130 lbs. Potentially the best watchmakers lathe ever made. This example has seen some use. Based on the initials on the right of the lathe and the numbering on the box, I suspect that it may have been part of a watchmaking school at some point. Most are Boley original, but the dog bones? Shown in the 2nd to last picture are not. The wooden block is replacement: should be iron-wood; it’s walnut & should be replaced with iron wood if you are going to polish with it. The saw holder collet (last picture) is also not original, but works fine. The drawbar is a replacement (made by me). Fully functional & high quality, but not original to this lathe. The box is in good shape, but the latches are not original. The motor is 220V 50 Hz. Great if you are in Europe, but not for those in the US. With a minor re-wiring, you can then control the motor speed with exactness and it runs at your choice of speed as smooth as butter. I can give you some tips on this if you like. This lathe is a dream. When I got one in watchmaking school, even the teachers started to drool. (I have another which I will keep and use for all of my high-precision work). The pictures are the description. If you have a question, just ask. The collets (3-50mm) are complete, but two of them (12, 50) are not Boley. They are Schaublin or Bergeon – not sure which, but really high quality (equivilent to Boley), so not an issue unless you are a purist. This is not mint and is priced accordingly. In response to questions. 1 Cross slide backlash: L/R i. Going towards the spindle: I’m seeing about 30-40 degrees. This cooresponds to 3 or 4 on the full turn scale of 25. Cutting into the diameter of the part: I see about 8 on a scale of 50 for a full turn. This appears to be about 50 degrees. 2 Runout: This was hard to measure. It depends on having a straight rod, and more importantly tightening the piece correctly in the collet, trueness of the collet, etc. I found the straightest rod that I could and then cut the ends using my schaublin 70 lathe to try to get them relatively straight and 3 mm in diameter. I then attached them to this lathe using the 3 mm collet. I ran 3 tests each time removing the rod, finding a random orientation, and then tightening the piece. I measured the max deviation of the rod at a location 74.5 mm from the spindle. The values I got (max from steady rest minus min from steady rest) were 0.38 mm, 0.01mm, and 0.20 mm. I do not trust these measurements to be entirely accurate. I think that clamping of the part is as likely to introduce as much error as the spindle itself, but anyhow this is what I could measure. Take it with a grain of salt. 3 Alignment of the odd colored tailstock: This was clearly taken from a different unit. I have checked alignment visually and cannot see any misalignment. This is the offset tailpiece which is used with the very fine triangular heads for balance staff work. It appears to have been repainted, possibly in a color very close to the original. I have removed a small amount of paint that was in the tube to allow accessories to move through the tub, but it is still a tad on the tight side. Regular use and some thin oil should remove any trace surface rust and allow things to move freely. I have had this treasure for a long time and I hate to see it go, I have several lathes but this by far is my best. I think this lathe is in fantastic condition with no rust or corrosion and no damage, there are just a few very minor scrapes and marks from normal use. Lathe comes with all of its original Boley levers and tightening knobs, even still has the spring. You can loosen the knob and switch from the tool rest to the matching cross slide in just a matter of seconds. All parts of this lathe slide on and off as smooth as silk, it is truly a joy to use. The kendrick and Davis motor is also in exceptional condition and working great. The tailstock is the highly sought after ” collet holding tailstock ” with matching finish. Lathe still has matching base for bench mount set up. High quality motor works great and has a toggle switch at its base, left pos. Is forward, middle pos. Is off and right pos. Power flow and therefore speed is controlled with foot pedal seen in pics. This lathe is ready to use. The reason for this is I do not embellish my descriptions or mislead in any way.
