Rare Holtzapffel ornamental turning lathe #2416. These are used to turn stock round, and also to index it so that rotating cutters can be passed along the surface to cut flutes and grooves in complex geometrical patterns. Many accessories exist for these machines, to turn spirals, complex face patterns, and shapes. This rare model has back gearing, allowing it to turn wood or metals such as brass. The lathe headstock is excellent and tight and missing one small shaft key (easily made). The over arm is there with the overhead drive drum but some hangers will need to be made. There are two cross slides, one for wood and one for metal. There are lots of chucks as shown. Also included is a mahogany cabinet with shape drills, a set of threading masters, and cutting frames as shown. Not originally part of it but also included is a clutch and pulley assembly that uses the same round belting. This could be set up with a motor to provide clutch-engaged, powered drive. A very rare machine, even for a Holtzapffel. The craftsmanship in these lathes is exquisite! Few were made with back gearing! The lathe is located in Inman, SC, ZIP 29349.
