South Bend 10L Heavy 10 Vintage Toolroom Lathe With Taper, Milling, Tooling
This lathe is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the listing at any time. You will have all the time you want to inspect, test and use the machine and feedback will be left before the lathe is loaded. I can only load 12 pictures, I have lots more. There are 24 on CraigsList-Virginia-Lynchburg-Tools-by owner. Items not pictured are in same condition as items pictured. 1950’s South Bend “Heavy 10″ Metal Lathe. Extended range gear box. Large dials 0.100. 6 3-jaw Buck chuck with both sets of jaws with key. 7.5 4-jaw South Bend chuck made by Skinner with reversible jaws with key. Palmgren 250 milling attachment. 7 Dog Drive Plate. 9.25 face plate. 7.5 blank plate. 5c Collet Drawbar with adapter. Bull nose live Center. Jacobs #34 0-1/2 tailstock drill chuck. Bed mounted Collet rack/stand. Brand new Phase 2 quick change tool post and 5 tool holders. Original lantern post and 10 holders. 13 MT drill bits. This lathe was completely taken apart for thorough cleaning and inspection. It was put back together with all new wicking, felts, gaskets, shims, and several new bearings as needed new bearings in under mount Drive, new bearing in quick change box. Several newer bearings from a parts machine were used throughout. Several worn gears were replaced with newer gears- idler and tumbler twin gears from a parts machine. It has a new motor belt, new drive belt, new tags, new Crossfeed and compound nuts and many new gits oilers. Spindle bearings are in good used condition. I had keys made for the locks and they work well. I replaced the worn 3-phase motor with a newer Dayton 3/4hp single phase 110v reversible motor and drum switch. The half nuts and Leadscrew are in excellent condition. The bed has a light wear ridge but is still quite capable of making good parts. It will consistently hold. 0015″ across an unsupported piece of 2″ diameter 6061 aluminum sticking 6 out of the chuck. This is on un-level concrete floor. Take it home and bolt it down and level the bed and I wouldn’t be surprised if you can’t get half of that out. I have to move it around and around to do projects in my small shop so it’s not worth it to level it out here. 015 at the most worn area. The 3-jaw chuck has a TIR of. 011″ at 2″ on the inside jaws and. 019 on the outside jaws. All feeds and functions work as they should. The clutch drags just a tad on auto feed but it is not wear, I just can’t get it adjusted right. The lathe runs well and the spindle bearings run very cool. When the gear box is in neutral all you hear is a little tick, tick, tick as the belt comes around. When the gear box is engaged it is no more noisy than any open geared lathe but if you’ve never heard one they do make some noise. The overall dimensions of the cabinet are 52″L x 22″D without the bed rack hanging over. It weights around 1,100 pounds and I can load it with a forklift into a trailer. I’m happy to hang on to this but I have 4 lathes and this one is the smallest. I’d like it to go to a good home but I do not need to sell it. This is a hefty price tag, I know that. Its right at what I have in the machine, tooling, replacement parts and pieces. There’s about 200 hours tied up in the process that are essentially free. It’s also why I’ve tried to provide a lot of information up front. Not so with this machine. Thanks for looking and please remember any correspondence here will mean a sale here.
