This is a wood Pattern Makers lathe manufactured by Wadkin Ltd. In Leicester in England. I was employed there as a wood pattern maker from 1970 to 1977. The first pattern I was given to build was a lathe project which I turned on this lathe. This lathe has a two speed 220 volt 3 phase motor with a four step flat pulley giving 8 speeds ranging from 190 rpm to 3360 rpm. The drive belt is the original 4 wide fiberglass belt which shows little indication of wear. I keep a shim under the belt speed change pedal to keep the weight of the motor off belt. The lathe will turn 72 (6′) between centers. It will swing a 21 dia. Over the bed, 16 1/2 dia. This lathe has a removable section of bed creating a gap which allows for a 34 dia. Swing with a 11 depth from the face plate. As the lathe stands 80 dia. Would be the max. One could turn outboard. The calibration on the crank dials are in. 001 increments with a 360 deg. There are four steel face plates, two for inboard and two for outboard turning. The wood face plates which mount to these steel plates are of 17″, 18″, 19″, and 36″ dia. There are two steady rests for hand turning and a pair of split turning centers for turning pieces that are split along the horizontal axis. This lathe is in extremely good condition and very accurate. Solid cast iron construction makes for a very heavy rigid machine. The American equivalent to this machine would be an Oliver pattern makers lathe. This lathe will accommodate small as well as large turnings and is indeed a pleasure to turn on. I will mount on 6″ X 6″ timbers to act as rails for moving on rollers. The item “Wadkin pattern makers, gap bed wood turning lathe” is in sale since Monday, April 02, 2018.
